Block Island’s undeniable charm lies within its historic homes, hotels, outbuildings, and lighthouses. These buildings are what make our island so uniquely special. Scenic Block Island is launching the Preservation Plaque Program. Our aim is to highlight historic structures within our community and therefore increase public awareness by placing historic plaques on them.

In the First Phase of the project, we are reaching out to home-owners whose homes and buildings are already listed and documented in the Historic and Architectural Resources of Block Island, Rhode Island (also known as the Green Book), published by the Rhode Island Historical Preservation Commission or Preserving the Architectural Heritage of Block Island Program (2008). Read further fo see how to proceed on the How to Qualify tab.

The Second Phase we hope to include all homeowners that are not listed in the above mentioned resources but need documentation. In addition we plan to offer building owner’s information that we hope will be useful to them in preserving their older homes. It is our hope to offer access to resources of all kinds, such as; tax deductions, energy sources, preservation experts, where to buy historic architectural details, lead paint dos and dont’s, and selling your historic home to name a few. Further knowledge will offer homeowners some great approaches to care for their iconic homes. There are a multitude of great resources that will save their homes and save them money.

The Preservation Plaque Program is a two-fold project, first is to identify our historic structures and create awareness and the second is to supply owners with up to date information on how to best take care of their historic buildings.
